We're finally getting around to a much needed update and we have lots to report!
Swain Resort has new operators! Scott and Jodi Carts & Shawn and Celeste Schoonover took over operations in August and spent weeks getting the resort ready for the season. They're now open with some of the finest skiing in Western new York. We wish them much success. Be sure to visit their website.
Technology - Residents of our town know all too well that we have lacked cellular coverage and high speed internet service. Over the past year we have been successful in obtaining DSL high speed internet service in the portion of town covered by Frontier Telephone. Cellular coverage in this portion of town is still somewhat spotty but improving all the time. The Hamlet of Swain has had neither cellular nor high speed internet. That is about to change as a result of two events that happened over the past few months.
First, Verizon has filed an application for a new cell site on Swain Hill Road. We could see cellular coverage sometime in the spring.
Second, thanks to Southern Tier West's grant of $150,000, we are currently installing a wireless high speed internet system! The system will bring service to many residents and businesses in the general Swain area with additional coverage as needed.
New York State - We're all too familiar with the financial situation in New York State. Of course, this will have an impact on our town. The biggest impact is on the state retirement program. In 2010 we will pay $14,560. The state projects this will increase to $23,216 next year. That's an increase of almost $9,000 or 59%. This could represent a 3% tax increase. The town board will be looking at how to mitigate this increase and we hope the state will come up with a plan to reduce the impact on local communities. Other state cuts could also affect us but it's unknown at this time where any additional cuts may take place.
